Nerja Carnival: Nerja’s energy in February and March
Events guide: the key days of Carnival
The official programme varies each year, but there are three moments you absolutely must not miss:
Jueves de Compadres y Comadres. The week before Carnival kicks off with these festive Thursdays when groups of friends get together to celebrate with laughter, songs and the first tongue-in-cheek jabs at local current affairs. It’s the perfect warm-up — more intimate and neighbourhood-based — ideal for seeing the most authentic side of the festivities.
The Grand Costume Parade. The central Saturday of Carnival is the big day. Comparsas, murgas and groups of friends take over the streets of the centre in a parade that blends creativity, a lot of sewing work and humour that can sometimes be razor-sharp. Coordinated group costumes are the kings of the afternoon. Get there early to grab a good spot along the route because turnout is high.
The Burial of Chanquete: the grand finale. On Carnival Tuesday, Nerja celebrates what makes it unique in all of Andalusia. Without doubt, the act with the most personality. But this one deserves its own section, because it truly does.
The Burial of Chanquete: a tradition unique to Nerja
If in many cities in Spain Carnival ends with the Burial of the Sardine, here in Nerja they do it with the Burial of Chanquete. And the difference isn’t just the fish: it’s the whole emotional weight and local identity behind it.
Chanquete is a tiny fish that historically provided a living for many Nerja fishing families. Nowadays its capture is prohibited to protect the species, but its memory lives on strongly in the town’s gastronomy and culture. Burying it symbolically at the end of Carnival is an act that mixes joke and tribute, festive farewell and pride in what is uniquely local.
Chanquete’s funeral procession makes its way through the streets amid exaggerated wails, feigned tears and very real laughter. Locals dress up as widows and theatrical mourners, improvising farewell speeches and songs. For lifelong Nerja residents, it’s the most moving and the most fun moment of the year in equal measure. For the visitor seeing it for the first time, it’s a scene they won’t easily forget. Find a spot near the route in good time, because crowds gather to watch the procession pass.
Logistical tips to enjoy Carnival in Nerja without stress
What costume should you wear? Nerja doesn’t demand haute couture costumes, but it does appreciate effort. Group themes work brilliantly. If you’re going as a couple or family, coordinate your looks: you’ll get a lot more applause in the parade. Wear comfortable footwear because you’ll be walking (and dancing) a lot.
Getting there: the advantage of having your own car. If you’re staying in Nerja, great. But if you’re in Maro, Frigiliana or any other village in La Axarquía, the bus can make the evening tricky: limited timetables, the last service leaves before the party ends, and there’s no easy way to carry costumes comfortably.
With a hire car from Car Hire Nerja, you come and go when you like. Costumes go in the boot, without getting creased or lost along the way. You can park, soak up the atmosphere at your own pace, and stay right until the final moment of the Burial of Chanquete without watching the clock. That freedom is worth a lot during Carnival.
Parking in Nerja during the festivities
Let’s be honest: Nerja gets busy at Carnival. The centre is closed to traffic during the parade hours, so the strategy is to park before the closures begin. These are the most reliable areas:
- Parking by the Ermita de las Angustias (upper area, close to the centre): a good option if you arrive early.
- Avenida de Pescia and the adjacent streets north of the old town: a bit more walking, but they often have space.
- Municipal market area: fine for the afternoon if that year’s road-closure plan allows it.
- If you can, parking on the outskirts and walking in 10–15 minutes is the calmest option. Check traffic closures on Nerja Town Hall’s channels a few days beforehand.
An invitation to experience La Axarquía’s most colourful celebration
Nerja Carnival isn’t a show to watch from the sidelines: it’s a festival to dive into, dress up without embarrassment and let yourself be carried by the energy of a town that knows how to celebrate. Whether it’s your first time or you already know the festival from previous years, each edition brings something new. And the Burial of Chanquete, year after year, remains that moment that reminds you there are traditions worth protecting and sharing.
Come with time, with enthusiasm and, if you can, with your costume already packed in the boot of the car.
